Child and Protective Services Training

Working effectively with children with developmental disabilities or children with special health care needs requires a unique set of skills and knowledge. The Texas Center for Disability Studies developed all-day workshops to provide information for Child Protective Services field workers from the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services to help make their jobs easier when working with children with disabilities and their families.
 

Workshop content includes the history, values, and philosophy of caring for children with disabilities in families, as well as the basics of developmental disabilities such as mental retardation, autism,
cerebral palsy, and other medical and physical disabilities.  Participants also learn to identify the support and service needs that help children with developmental and medical disabilities live successfully in families and gain an understanding of the challenges involved in caring for a child with disabilities. The impact of those challenges on family dynamics is discussed at each workshop.
 

The workshops help field workers and others gain knowledge of programs and services available in Texas for children with disabilities.  These workshops have been presented annually in at least five Texas cities since 2005.
